Most tech support are provided by the product's manufacturers and they are available for free counselling and support for the products they sell or they give tech support for a minimal fee.

Tech support is enabled either by phone or through a web site via a chat session. Big companies have internal tech support teams to cater to the needs of the company's employees. Most of the tech support comes from the Internet and a good lot of them comes for free. The tech experts take care of all the computer related problems in order to provide advice and assistance to users and consumers alike. While smaller problems are given out mostly for free, as the problem becomes more complicated, a certain amount of fee is collected from the consumer for premium tech support.

Thee are various ways to enable and get an access to tech support services. Mostly all of them are delivered through the Internet. However, there are different technologies deployed to sent out these services. For a user who wants to have a direct interaction with the tech support specialists, various tools like SMS, Online chat, E-mail or Fax etc. can deployed to send out the information and tech support. Outlook Express is one of the better email clients that are available to the user, and it is a product of Microsoft. To have an email account in Outlook Express is easy. It serves the same purpose like all email clients, to send and receive emails. Creating a personal or a business email account in Outlook Express is not a tough task. One needs to keep these steps in mind.

Compatibility of old computer with Microsoft's new operating system

It is only natural that whenever a new operating system makes its entry into the market, the users of previous versions of the operating system will have sleepless nights trying to figure out if the existing systems will be compatible with the new version available. And here we see Microsoft's Windows 7 and its old users. But Microsoft has devised a way to make it slightly easier for its users to determine if the user's old computer is compatible with its latest version by introducing a Compatibility Center. It will reveal if a computer is outdated to meet the new OS standards or what software or driver upgrade it will require for an upgrade.
The support will be available in the form of a compatibility website, but it will be available only after the release of Windows 7 operating system in stores from October 22, 2009. As the launch draws nearer, thousands of products will be enlisted in the support pipeline where the peripherals and the applications associated with the support will be scrutinized and checked and slowly, with that, with the required data the testing will be carried out. There is also a provision for users to e-mail their product requests and thereafter look for a new gear which will have the logo: Compatible with Windows 7 operating system.
As for other users with other operating systems like Windows XP or earlier versions, Microsoft has asked its users to get help from local computer service provider. The most common procedure would be to undertake a clean installation which means one will have to back up all current files and settings and then reinstall them all over again.

Upgrading an Operating System

It is always important to keep in mind to make a quick check on the hardware available in a computer before a user makes an operating system upgrade. Newer operating systems need higher processing power to function and operate. The old devices in an old computer will not be able to support some applications in the new operating system.
For the operating system upgrade, a user will have to insert the Upgrade CD into the CD ROM. This will immediately start processing the upgrade. Remember to select the Upgrade option and not the Fresh Install option when asked for. When there is a prompt on the selection of the File System, it is always suggested to choose the existing file system then opting for a new one. The operating system upgrade will gradually get processed by itself.
Once the upgrade is completed, the next best thing to do would be to quickly check if all the applications are running. In case a particular application refuses to run, then simply uninstall it and reinstall it back again. After the operating system upgrade has been enabled without any glitches, then check if any hardware device is functioning properly or not. If any device fails to respond, then use the specified driver to install the hardware back again.
At any point, if a user encounters any complication in installing or reinstalling applications or devices, then help can be sought from the application vendor's or the computer manufacturer's website.

Windows 7 activation hack seemingly to be followed by Trojans

There is a strong possibility of Trojan attacks looming large in the case of the Windows 7 product activation system cracks. These cracks had been developed in the time period of less than a month since Microsoft released it's new operating system, Windows 7. The ChewWGA with the RemoveWAT utility gives the option to a potential Windows 7 user to overlook the Windows Genuine Advantage registration procedure. These hacks elude the product activation without requiring OEM keys. This was never an issue on the pre-release code hacks.
And now, a reliable security firm has spilled the beans saying that Trojans posing as Windows 7 operating system cracks are lurking around. Very soon RemoveWAT and Chew-WGA versions in Trojan will be available on websites and file-sharing networks everywhere. The launch of the Windows 7 operating system cracking tools was quite alarming and it took security watchers by surprise.
Similar tracks were also released after the launch of Vista operating system two years back. The problem was quickly resolved when Microsoft issued an update then. The same was the case with the Windows XP as well. when it's utilities also started making an appearance in 2005. It happened immediately after the Windows Genuine Advantage system became a compulsory mandate in the same year.

Tips before making an Operating System Upgrade

It is surely a lot cheaper to make an operating system upgrade instead of buying a new one altogether. But there are a few things to keep in mind before the upgrade exercise is carried out. It is important to check and find out if the hardware one has on his computer is compatible with the new operating system and see if it meets all the requirements to support the new OS that is yet to be installed. This is so, because the new operating systems come with higher processing power than the older ones and these ones need more space and efficiency to support the new software that is getting ready to be installed. The older hardware devices usually do not function in the new OS. This is also true for applications.

So one should make a list of all the hardware that has been connected to a computer and enlist all of them to compare it with the requirements that is demanded for the new OS. This list should include the CPU speed, RAM size, Hard Disk free space etc. They are among the prominent ones and a user should not leave any stone unturned to endure an exercise to go through their details and check up on them. They should meet all the requirements for the newer operating system. These details, if not available, with the user then can be accessed from the vendor's website. It will have all the minimum hardware requirements for the new operating system. Usually this should ensure the upgrade but it is always better to back-up all data and copy it into a CD before the upgrade is made.

How to troubleshoot Dell Printer

Dell printers are very popular for both their wide range in models and low price point. However, if you find that your Dell printer is acting up, or not working the way that it should, here are a few printer repair tips that you can try, to get your Dell printer back in working order.

Installing New Drivers
If you have recently purchased your Dell printer, but can't get it to respond when you try to print something, you may need to install some drivers. Drivers are small programs that allow your computer to interact with the new peripheral. The easiest way to download the drivers your computer needs to interact with the printer is to insert the CD that came with your computer into the CD-ROM drive and let the installation program run. However, if you have misplaced the CD that came with your printer, visit the Dell printer support page for Internet-based driver downloads. See Resources for a link.

Ink Spotting and Splotching
If you encounter frequent spotting or splotching on your documents when you use your Dell printer, then you need to do some routine cleaning on your printer's print head. The print head area is the place where the ink cartridges are contained and moved around. To clean the print head area, simply take a dry cloth (preferably lint-free) and wipe down the bars that control the movement of the printer cartridge container. After any excess dust/ink has been removed from these bars, remove the print cartridges and clean them by lifting up the protective film on the bottom and then gently rubbing a q-tip on the bottom (without damaging the bottom of the cartridge.) Lastly, use more q-tips to clean the cartridge module, before replacing the ink cartridges. Then try printing a test page to see if the spotting/splotching problem has subsided.

Paper Feed Issues
If you have a paper jam or the Dell printer is telling you that the printer is out of paper when the feed tray is full, then you probably have a problem with the spooler. Open the print head to expose the spooler, and check for jams. If you see some paper fibers wrapped around the spooler, turn the printer off, and then gently try to remove the paper with your hands (in the case of large sheets) or a pair of tweezers (in the case of small, winding fibers). Once you have cleared any jams, try cleaning the spooler off with a lint-free cloth, and double-checking its placement in the printer. If it seems crooked or off-center, try looking to the sides to try and find its rightful place. You can then either "click" it into place or tighten the side screws with an eyeglass screwdriver (depending on the model).

Toxin Detection As Close As An Inkjet Printer

If that office inkjet printer has become just another fixture, it's time to take a fresh look at it. Similar technology may soon be used to develop paper-based biosensors that can detect certain harmful toxins that can cause food poisoning or be used as bioterrorism agents.

In a paper published in the July issue of Analytical Chemistry, John Brennan and his research team at McMaster University, working with the Sentinel Bioactive Paper Network, describe a method for printing a toxin-detecting biosensor on paper using a FujiFilm Dimatix Materials Printer.

The researchers demonstrated the concept on the detection of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitors such as paraoxon and aflatoxin B1 on paper using a "lateral flow" sensing approach similar to that used in a home pregnancy test strip.

The process involves formulating an ink like the one found in computer printer cartridges but with special additives to make the ink biocompatible. An ink comprised of biocompatible silica nanoparticles is first deposited on paper, followed by a second ink containing the enzyme, and the resulting bio-ink forms a thin film of enzyme that is entrapped in the silica on paper. When the enzyme is exposed to a toxin, reporter molecules in the ink change colour in a manner that is dependent on the concentration of the toxin in the sample.

This simple and cost-effective method of adhering biochemical reagents to paper is expected to bring the concept of bioactive paper a significant step closer to commercialization. The goal for bioactive paper is to provide a rapid, portable, disposable and inexpensive way of detecting harmful substances, including toxins, pathogens and viruses, without the need for sophisticated instrumentation. The research showed that the printed enzyme retains full activity for at least two months when stored properly, suggesting that such sensor strips should have a good shelf life.

Portable bio-sensing papers are expected to be extremely useful in monitoring environmental and food-based toxins, as well as in remote settings in less industrialized countries where simple bioassays are essential for the first stages of detecting disease.

Applications for bioactive paper also include clinical applications in neuroscience, drug assessment, and pharmaceutical development.

Troubleshooting Dot Matrix Printers

This post provides printer support to general troubleshooting of Dot Matrix Printers.
• If the printer self-tests OK but will not print jobs from the computer, check the following:
  • Dip switch settings
  • Proper driver for your application software
  • Bad or disconnected cable
• Some printers have both serial and parallel connections. If one doesn't work, change cables and try the other. Be sure to change any dip switch settings needed by the printer to recognize the change. If this works, you may have had a physical problem with the output port on the computer or the input port of the printer that you tried the first time.
• If a dot matrix printer shuts down and recovers frequently, it may be having problems with its "thermistor". A thermistor is a device used to keep the printer from overheating. Try replacing this part before you replace the entire print head.
• Some printers can be set by dip switches for unidirectional or bidirectional printing. Bidirectional is normally faster, but might cause problems with graphic output for some combinations of applications and printers. If you suspect this problem, reset your dip switches for unidirectional printing.
• If your output is double-spaced when you expect single-spaced, you may be getting an extra Carriage Return and Line Feed at the end of every line.Reset the dip switch(es) controlling this.
• If your print quality is poor, first check the ribbon for wear. Also examine the print head spacing. Your head may be too far away from the platen for your current paper thickness. If adjusting the spacing doesn't solve the problem, clean the print head itself with a cotton swab dipped lightly in alcohol.

How to Add Windows 2000 printer drivers to Windows NT 4.0

This post provide printer support to troubleshoot printing problems in Windows 2000 and in Windows Server 2003. To add a network printer managed by Windows NT 4.0 to a Windows 2000-based computer,

Follow these steps:
1. On the Windows 2000-based computer, install the printer locally on LPT1.
2. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Printers.
3. Right-click the printer, and then click Properties.
4. On to the Ports tab, click LPT1.
5. Click Add Port.
6. Double-click Local Ports.
7. Type \\servername\printershare, where servername is the name of the server and printershare is the name of the printer share.
8. Click OK.

Printer Networking Support

Printers that come ready for networking typically have a network adapter installed. Check your printer’s manual for more information, but printers that are ready to be connected to a wired network have a special jack called RJ-45 installed, which looks similar to a regular phone jack, just bigger.

In simplest terms, printers connect to wired networks through the router. One of the plugs goes into the router, and the other end goes into the printer’s jack. When all the pieces are restarted, you’ll need to install print driver on all the PCs that will use the printer. This can usually be found on the CD that came with the printer (as well as on the manufacturer’s Web site).

Wireless
If your printer is wireless-enabled, you don’t have to connect any cables to it at all. You will need to get it recognized by the network, meaning that if you have security features enabled on your wireless router (and you should), you’ll need to share those with the printer. Consult the printer’s manual for the details, as this process is different from printer to printer.

Print Servers
Even printers that aren’t network-enabled out of the box can often be networked by using a print server, a device that connects to your router and your printer. This lets the printer be shared by any computer on the network.

Bluetooth
Bluetooth is a short-range wireless protocol that many PCs and cell phones use (for a wireless headset, for example). You can find many printers that can be Bluetooth-enabled as well, so you can print from your phone or (if you're not too far away) your laptop. It's unlikely that a printer will come with Bluetooth built in, so you'll need an adapter. These are thumb drives that plug right into the printer's USB port. If you intend to print from your phone, Bluetooth is a handy option.

Sharing a Printer
The Printing Preferences menu for your printer will give you an option to share the printer if it’s network ready. This process is usually quite simple: open the printer’s properties (in Windows you’ll open the Control Panel, choose Printers and Other Hardware, and then View Installed Printers) and look for a tab called “Sharing.” You’ll need to give the printer a name so that the other computers on the network can find it.
